It is with a sad heart that we bring you this interview. Mike Boyd, the current owner and driver of the Winged Express has passed away. This is the last interview that Mike participated in and we send our heart felt condolences to his family. God Speed Mike!
Very sad to learn of Mike Boyd’s Passing. I worked with Mike many years ago and had the opportunity of being around when he and his brother Rick would take the Top Fueler Nitro Warrior to Fermosa drag strip. At that time Mike was doing 219 mph. At days end, head to the go cart track in Bakersfield. Mike being overly competitive would not let you pass him. He would reach out of his cart and grab your cart and yank you and your cart backwards. Lack of strength was not one of Mike’s traits.
I met Mike and spoke to him at Bowling Green a few years ago. He had his trailer set up a ways back behind the starting line area and not in the regular pit area. Mousie was there also. I remember how approachable and friendly Mike was. He was very patient and would answer all the questions I asked him. I remember asking him how it was trying to keep the Wing going straight. He said he would get two or three straight passes and then one squirrely pass, you just never knew for sure he said. What an interesting piece of drag racing history. I am just grateful I had the opportunity to meet Mike and witness the Winged Express make a couple of exciting passes. RIP Mike Boyd.
